Chelsea agree Costa deal

Chelsea have agreed to sign striker Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid, the Premier League club announced on Tuesday.
The Spain international had long been linked with a move to the London side and completion of the deal appears to be imminent after the Blues said they had met the buy-out clause for the 25-year-old forward.
"Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa, with Chelsea meeting the buy-out clause for the Spanish international," said a statement on the club's website.
Atletico later confirmed that agreement had been reached on the buy-out clause, adding that Costa had expressed his desire to transfer to Chelsea at the end of last season.
It has been reported the eventual transfer fee could be in the region of £32 million ($55 million, 40 million euros).
Brazil-born Costa scored 35 goals for Atletico last season as they won the Spanish title and reached the Champions League final, only to lose in extra-time to city rivals Real Madrid.
And his desire to represent Spain, rather than Brazil, at this year's World Cup in his homeland backfired spectacularly as the reigning champions crashed out in the first round.
Costa appeared in two friendlies for Brazil last year before pledging his allegiance to Spain, prompting stunned Selecao and former Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari to state: "He is turning his back on a dream of millions, to represent our national team, the five-time champions in a World Cup in Brazil."
After seeing his dreams of World Cup glory with Spain in Brazil come to nothing, Costa said: "It's been a good year in many respects but a tough one in others."
Despite his World Cup travails, Costa appears to have a big fan in Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, with the Portuguese complaining that a lack of strikers – despite the presence of Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto'o at Stamford Bridge – last season prevented the third-placed Blues from surpassing Premier League winners Manchester City and runners-up Liverpool in the season just gone.
Last month Spanish sports daily Marca quoted Mourinho – whose Chelsea side lost in the Champions League semifinals to Atletico – as saying that "Costa is a footballer I want in my team".
Defender Ashley Cole and midfielder Frank Lampard both appear to be on their way out of Chelsea but former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas was signed from Barcelona last month on the day before Spain suffered a crushing 5-1 defeat by the Netherlands in their opening World Cup match in Brazil.
Meanwhile Chelsea also announced on Tuesday that veteran Australian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer had signed a new one-year contract at the age of 41.
Schwarzer made the short journey from nearby Premier League rivals Fulham to Chelsea on a free transfer last season as back-up to Petr Cech and went on to play 12 matches for Mourinho's men, including the semifinal with Atletico after the Czech shot-stopper was injured.

Keshi never resigned

Stephen Keshi has astonishingly declared that he has not resigned as Nigeria coach.
Reports in the past two days quoted the former Nigeria captain saying he was no longer coach of the Super Eagles, but Keshi says that is not the case.
The “Big Boss” claims he was misquoted.
““What I said to my players was that this may be my last match at the helm of affairs in the national team, because my contract terminates with the World Cup and I have not been offered a new one.
“I was a bit shocked that the global media went to town to say I have called it quits with the national team. Resignations are not done on the pages of newspapers but formally,” he said.
Keshi, who took over the reins of the Nigeria national team in 2011, led the side to glory at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.
He then resigned barely 24 hours after his finest hour as a coach before rescinding that decision shortly afterwards.
The Nigeria Football Federation has yet to officially react to the latest situation.

Transfer news: Liverpool announce signing of Adam Lallana from Southampton

Adam Lallana: New arrival at Liverpool
Liverpool have completed the signing of midfielder Adam Lallana from Southampton.
The England international has joined Liverpool on a long-term deal, believed to be worth around £25m, after passing a medical at Melwood.
Lallana made 250 appearances during his time at Southampton, becoming club captain in 2012, and hopes to play a key role as the Reds pursue silverware next season.
Liverpool new signing Adam Lallana says he is excited about the next chapter of his career and can’t wait to get started
"I'm so excited for the next chapter of my career, coming to a special club like Liverpool,” he told the club’s official website. “I'm quite humbled and I just can't wait to get started.
"Hopefully I can settle in quickly, and I will give it my best throughout the whole time I'm here. I hope I can add something to the team and hopefully we can win trophies while I'm here, because that's why I'm here - for success."
The 26-year-old becomes Liverpool’s second signing of the summer, joining Rickie Lambert who also arrived from Southampton, while a deal in principle has been agreed for Bayer Leverkusen's Emre Can.
Manager Brendan Rodgers is confident that Lallana has all the attributes needed to become a success at Anfield.
"We are delighted to have secured the services of one of the Premier League's top talents in signing Adam Lallana," said Rodgers.
"He (Lallana) is an exceptional young man and someone who has a love for the game - and, most importantly, a desire to progress and improve."
Brendan Rodgers
"What is apparent about Adam is that his character is on a par with his talent.
"He is an exceptional young man and someone who has a love for the game - and, most importantly, a desire to progress and improve.

"We have seen, over the past two seasons in the Barclays Premier League, he has a tactical awareness to adapt to what is required of him and to put the team above his personal ambitions.
"He has leadership skills and personal qualities that make him a special commodity and I am delighted we have acted decisively to make sure he is wearing a Liverpool shirt next season.
"Adam is aware there will be great competition for places at this club and he is hungry to improve further. We are confident he will fit perfectly with the culture we have at Liverpool.
"I'm excited about working with Adam and helping him to progress even further

World Cup 2014: Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi resigns after exit

Stephen Keshi

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has stepped down from his position after the Super Eagles' exit from the World Cup in Brazil.

France scored twice in the last 11 minutes in Brasilia on Monday to reach the quarter-finals at their expense.
The 52-year-old was appointed Nigeria boss in 2011 and helped them become African champions two years later.
Nigeria captain Joseph Yobo also retired from international football following their exit.
Fenerbahce's Yobo, 33, scored a late own goal after Paul Pogba's header had broken Nigerian resistance.
Keshi offered his resignation after last year's Africa Cup Of Nations triumph, citing a lack of support and respect, although he was persuaded to stay by Nigeria's sport minister.
A group stage win against Bosnia-Hercegovina helped Nigeria reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time since 1998, despite the players being involved in a row over bonuses.
Joseph Yobo
Joseph Yobo has surpassed Jay-Jay Okocha's record of nine World Cup matches for the Super Eagles
He becomes the sixth manager to leave his job during the World Cup, following the departures of Honduras's Luis Suarez, Iran's Carlos Queiroz, Japan's Alberto Zaccheroni, Italy's Cesare Prandelli and Ivory Coast's Sabri Lamouchi.
Keshi, who captained Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup finals, was previously in charge of Mali and Togo.
Yobo told BBC Sport it was a sad but glorious end to his own international career as Nigeria failed to make their first ever quarter-finals

Arsenal ‘to battle Liverpool’ for impressive Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas after World Cup heroics

Arsenal and Liverpool could fight it out for the signature of Costa Rica star Keylor Navas, after his goalkeeping heroics saw his side through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
Both Premier League sides are in the market for a new stopper this summer, with Arsenal losing Lukasz Fabianski to Swansea and Liverpool set to see long-term servant Pepe Reina depart Anfield.
And Navas has caught the eye in Brazil, impressing throughout the group stage before stealing the show as Costa Rica saw off Greece to reach the last eight.
The Levante keeper, 27, is also a target for Atletico Madrid who are preparing for Chelsea to recall loanee Thibaut Courtois, and Navas’ buy-out clause of just £6.5m could yet see other clubs join the chase.

‘A lot of our players are playing for their future and we will see what happens with the likes of [midfielder] Yeltsin Tejeda or Navas.’
